Perfume Sources
Thousands of years ago the human nose was just as good as it is today at discerning fine aromas. The ancient perfumers had a array of natural products with which to work. And a rose by any other name would have smelled as sweet......
So it is that Scents of Time have been successfully brought to this modern age for the wonder and enjoyment of all.
The full details of how these fragrances were lost, found and re-created are in booklets presented with the perfumes themselves, along with suitable poetic additions. In brief the fragrances are recovered by one of five ways:
- Head spacing the substances found (stealing their aromas through scientific instrumentation) as with Nenúfar, the flower's perfume was diffused into a polymer filter with the air around it and then reconstructed as the aroma of the Blue Lotus, a bloom sacred to all Pharaohs. The flower's chemistry contained a hallucinogen, myristicin. Egyptians got high steeping the petals in wine and drinking the wine. (The poem 'The Land of the Lotos Eaters' depicts this). The chemistry of the flower's perfume is kept intact with the humble nutmeg spice, which contains myristicin.
- Reconstruction from materials found, as with Pyxis, derived from floral, herbal and spice spores found in the garden of a perfumer, believed to be called Sperato, at Pompeii. These, along with substances garnered from the four corners of Empire, re-created Pyxis. A pixie fresco on the wall at the House of the Vetii in Pompeii gave the fragrance its name.
- Actual recovered samples, as with the bag of fragrances belonging to Adolphe Saalfeld, perfumer and survivor of RMS Titanic (lifeboat number three) . The bag was brought up from the debris field by a submersible in 2001 on the last recovery mission. However Scents of Time Ltd. is no longer involved in that development.
- Reconstructed from actual written formulae, as with Ankh, derived from famed Kyphi incense formula found at Edfu on the Nile. This fragrance was reputedly burnt three times during the day...to greet the sun on its return....to give thanks to the giver of life at noon...to pray for a swift return at eventide.
- Synthethised through recourse to written records and anecdotal evidence, as with the Elixir of Life, or Philosophers Stone, Petra. As above, so below. Of which more later......
